Florence Avant-Garde Tour

Florence Private Walking Tour to Discover the Most Stunning Local Highlights

This is one of my favorite Florence tours to give.
It is a walking tour designed for the ones of you who visit Florence for the first time. At the same time, it could be a good opportunity for the people who already know Florence and would like to discover hidden treasures and listen to amazing urban legends about artists we are all familiar with.

We will talk about the development of Florence across the centuries and what being avant-garde means in a city full of talented people who changed the world. Navigators, architects, scientists, artists, poets, bankers, merchants and “gelato” makers: Florentines were just forerunners in so many different unconventional ways.

From the Middle-Ages to the Reinassance: the Duomo and the Medieval Heart of Florence

Piazza Duomo is the spiritual center of Florence and where the private tour begins: we will see the overwhelming “duomo” of Santa Maria del Fiore (cathedral of Our Lady of the Flower), the baptistery dedicated to St. John the Baptist, patron saint of Florence, with its beautiful gilded bronze Paradise Door and Giotto’s cathedral bell tower.
All beautifully decorated with the shimmering Carrara marble creating a stunning contrast to the sleek buildings around it.

We will walk through the medieval heart of Florence discovering another fantastic place to visit: Dante’s family house. We can not miss typical narrow Florentine alleyways as well as ancient tower-houses.
The very city center of Florence has been Repubblic Square since Roman times. Then we will see the popular Piglet Market, a former luxury outdoor market, famous for its textile and leather goods.

The Political Center of Florence: an Open-Air Museum

Signoria Square will be our next step. As the political center of Florence it was enriched with sculptures representing the power of the Florentine Republic first and then of the Medici when they took over as rulers and royals.

The Replica of David is right in front of the massive Signoria Palace, showing us where the original icon used to be.
Loggia dei Lanzi, a late gothic open space is just as an open air art gallery hosting Perseus by eclectic artist Benvenuto Cellini and the Kidnapping of the Sabines by Flemish sculptur Giambologna.

Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge) is the only medieval bridge in Florence dating back to 14th century: we could also call it the the “Bling Bridge” because of the jewelry shops that have been here for centuries.
That’s what the Medici wanted in 16th century, instead of the butchers’ shops that used to be on the bridge ruining its vistas and atmosphere.

The Unconventional Florence private walking tour will just reveal extraordinary art and architectural beauties created during the Middle Ages and Renaissance.
It will make you discover the most stunning places to see in Florence.
