Wine Window Tour

Wine, Food History, Architecture And More Wine

Wine is never enough! It makes us happy and curious to know more about it.
Florentines have always known it, that’s why Florence is still dotted with small wine windows or doors, all different in shape but more or less same in size (the same as a wine bottle) that used to be the former wine shops and bars where to find some good wine to drink.

Wine Windows: History and Function

They were all closed off in the 60s and sometimes transformed into something totally different by creative people: they become unconventional mailboxes for example or tiny shop windows but they were still to be spotted in the whole city center of Florence, reminding people of the importance of having an healthy glass of wine a day. Maybe two.

Till something unthinkable happended: Covid-19.
All of a sudden the reasons why so many wine windows had appeared in Florence since 16th century become clear: love for wine, safety and social distancing to protect oneself from the plague and from other viruses.

The only thing to do waiting for the restrictions to be lifted was restoring and reopening the wine windows of the coffee-shops, bars and restaurants who had the chance to have them without even noticing them.

Re-opening and Restoration of Wine Windows

During Covid, one the most famous gelato shops of Florence was allowed to keep the wine window open. The shop had to stay closed, but they could sell gelato, espresso and wine to take away through the wine windows that hadn’t been in use for so long.

Guess what I first did when the lockdown was over: I had my espresso macchiato through a wine window. What a joy!

This tour covers the most important Florentine landmarks as well as some of the most well-preserved and newly re-opended wine windows while talking about wine, food and art.

Wine and Food Tasting. Why Not?

The tour ends with a wine tasting and some Tuscan treats in one of the most stunning wine shops of the city of Florence, discovering its hidden cellar full of exclusive Italian and international wines.

Art, architecture and wine culture: this is one of the top ten tours to be done in the town of Florence with a private local expert.
